These are great question stems to use when practicing comprehension with your child (scroll down to see more levels). I obviously encourage discussing these after reading, but you can also use these questions to prompt their thinking about a TV show, movie, or really anything!
The critical change in first grade is that they should be able to justify their answer. I sometimes push this thinking forward by pretending to disagree with them, forcing them to prove their answer to me. I also teach them to say “I know” (point to your brain) “because” (point to evidence IN THE BOOK).
